2009 Game Summaries
Opening Night,
9-15 in Stafford
Kristin Pearson
was an offensive machine registering three goals and two assists in
Coventry’s MCCC road victory. Amber Pelletier was a force as well,
collecting two goals and two assists. Kaitlyn Crosbie had the other goal
for Coventry who led 3-1- at the half.
Sept. 17 at
Enfield
Six Enfield
players scored goals in their NCCC win who led 2-1 at halftime. Kristin
Pearson and Becky Santos scored for Coventry
Sept. 22 Stafford
at Home
After allowing 6
goals in a loss to Coventry a week earlier, Stafford tightened up its
defense and earned a tie with the host Patriots in NCCC action. While
Stafford broke onto the scoreboard first, Coventry quickly got even, as
Kristin Pearson scored with an assist by Emily Zurmuhlen. Earlier this
week, Zurmuhlen, a senior, was named a tri-captain for the Patriots. But
Pearson’s shot would be the only one to get by Stafford’s keeper. Brooke
Levy and Caitlin Rauchle combined for nine saves in net for Coventry. Becky
Santos was a defensive standout for Coventry.
Sept. 25 at
Bolton
The Bolton High
soccer team won a shootout on Friday. Bolton built a 4-0 lead but the Lady
Patriots came back as Kristin Pearson put in two goals to cut their deficit
in half by halftime. But Coventry could get no closer. Amber Pelletier the
final goal for Coventry. Brooke Levy and Caitlin Rauchle combined for six
saves for the Lady Pats.
Sept. 29 Somers
at Home
A Somers hat
trick by Lucia Pantuosco paced a 4-1 win for the Spartans. Becky Santos,
assisted by Kristin Pearson scored for Coventry. “We played some of our
best soccer all year” Coventry Coach Warren Herrington said. “I told our
girls that this could have easily been a 4-4 tie or we could have won, but
their goalie was just incredible today.”Caitlin Rauchle made 13 saves for
the Lady Patriots. Amber Pelletier and Tierney Morton both played well.
October 2 Windsor
Locks at Home
Kristin Pearson
netted her second goal of the game with 18 minutes left to give Coventry
the NCCC win. Pearson headed in a corner kick by Becky Santos to put the
Lady Patriots in front to stay. She scored the game’s first goal off an
assist by Emily Zurmuhhlen. Caitlin Rauchle made nine saves in net for
Coventry. Becky Santos and Sarah Mills were defensive standouts for
Coventry
October 5 Granby
at Home
October 9 at
Windsor Locks Under the Lights
PEARSON’S OVERTIME
GOAL WINS GAME FOR COVENTRY When the clock was ticking down was when
Coventry High girls soccer team did its best work. Trailing 1-0 with 3:00
left in regulation, Coventry received a tying goal from Amber Pelletier.
With just 1:10 left in the second overtime, Kristin Pearson scored the game
winner as Coventry edged Windsor Locks in NCCC action. Coventry received
staunch goaltending from Caitlin Rauchle who made nine saves.
October 13 at
Somers
LEVY BREAKS
THROUGH, BUT SOMERS CAN’T…COVENTRY’S DEFENSE SPARLS WIN. When the Somers
High girls soccer team visited Coventry on Sept 29, the Spartans won
handily by a score of 4-1. The tables were turned in startling fashion on
Tuesday though. Brooke Levy’s goal, 5 minutes before halftime proved to be
the only goal that the Lady Patriots would need to gain a 1-0 NCCC victory.
Staunch defense made the difference as Coventry snapped the Somers’ five
game winning streak. Caitlin Rauchle made six saves for the shutout. “They
did an awesome job on defense” Somers Coach Mark Lacafta said.
October 16
Suffield at Home (game shortened by snow)
Caitlin Rauchle
made eight saves
October 21 at
Ellington
Coventry’s
Kristin Pearson exchanged second half goals and overtime goals with
Ellington’s Brittany Boscarino. Pearson twice gave Coventry the lead with
Amber Pelletier assisting on a goal that made it 2-1 in overtime. But
Ellington answered with 6 seconds left on the clock in the second overtime.
Caitlin Rauchle had 10 saves for the Lady Patriots.
October 23,
Canton at Home
Kristin Pearson
had a hat trick as Coventry rolled to a 7-0 NCCC victory against Canton.
Amber Pelletier added two goals while Becky Santos had a goal and three
assists for the Lady Pats. Sarah Mills also scored a goal. Caitlin Rauchle
earned a shutout with eight saves and was aided by the defense of Emily
Zurmuhlen and Brittany Pietro.
October 27, at
East Windsor
Amber Pelletier
scored twice as Coventry qualified for the State Tournament with an NCCC
win. Sarah Mills, Becky Santos and Jen Levy (her first varsity goal) added
a goal each for the Lady Pats. Caitlin Rauchle had 12 saves and then
switched to outside forward to seek some offensive points. Cassie Brierly
played well in goal for the entire second half.
October 30, at
East Granby
November 2, Avon
at Home
Avon led 2-0
until Amber Pelletier assisted by Nicki Kenefick got the Patriots (7-6-2) back in the game
with 31 minutes left to play. Unfortunately, Avon scored with 16 minutes to
go to put it away. Standouts for the Lady Pats were Caitlyn Rauchle in goal
with 11 saves and Brittany Pietro on defense with Emily Zurmuhlen (EZ)
stopping and turning things in the midfield.
November 4,
Bolton at Home
Sarah Willey,
Sarah Mills and Amber Pelletier each scored one goal as Coventry won at
home in NCCC action. Kristin Pearson had one assist for the Patriots.
Caitlyn Rauchle earned the win with 8 saves. Becky Santos, Emily Zurmuhlen and
Brittany Pietro were all standouts for the Lady Pats.
November 9, 2009,
Connecticut Class S State Tournament First Round
Portland scored
12:33 into the first half and that was all that they needed to oust the
Lady Patriots. On a corner kick with 35:00 left in the second half, Sarah
Mills and Kristin Pearson collided. Pearson, Coventry’s leading scorer
sustained a concussion and did not return. Mills also did not return.
Ashley Ellsworth left the game three minutes later after suffering a
concussion for the hard luck Patriots. Caitlyn Rauchle had 8 saves in a
strong showing as keeper.
