2009 Game Summaries

Opening Night, 9-15 in Stafford

Kristin Pearson was an offensive machine registering three goals and two assists in Coventry’s MCCC road victory. Amber Pelletier was a force as well, collecting two goals and two assists. Kaitlyn Crosbie had the other goal for Coventry who led 3-1- at the half.

Sept. 17 at Enfield

Six Enfield players scored goals in their NCCC win who led 2-1 at halftime. Kristin Pearson and Becky Santos scored for Coventry

Sept. 22 Stafford at Home

After allowing 6 goals in a loss to Coventry a week earlier, Stafford tightened up its defense and earned a tie with the host Patriots in NCCC action. While Stafford broke onto the scoreboard first, Coventry quickly got even, as Kristin Pearson scored with an assist by Emily Zurmuhlen. Earlier this week, Zurmuhlen, a senior, was named a tri-captain for the Patriots. But Pearson’s shot would be the only one to get by Stafford’s keeper. Brooke Levy and Caitlin Rauchle combined for nine saves in net for Coventry. Becky Santos was a defensive standout for Coventry.

Sept. 25 at Bolton

The Bolton High soccer team won a shootout on Friday. Bolton built a 4-0 lead but the Lady Patriots came back as Kristin Pearson put in two goals to cut their deficit in half by halftime. But Coventry could get no closer. Amber Pelletier the final goal for Coventry. Brooke Levy and Caitlin Rauchle combined for six saves for the Lady Pats.

Sept. 29 Somers at Home

A Somers hat trick by Lucia Pantuosco paced a 4-1 win for the Spartans. Becky Santos, assisted by Kristin Pearson scored for Coventry. “We played some of our best soccer all year” Coventry Coach Warren Herrington said. “I told our girls that this could have easily been a 4-4 tie or we could have won, but their goalie was just incredible today.”Caitlin Rauchle made 13 saves for the Lady Patriots. Amber Pelletier and Tierney Morton both played well.

October 2 Windsor Locks at Home

Kristin Pearson netted her second goal of the game with 18 minutes left to give Coventry the NCCC win. Pearson headed in a corner kick by Becky Santos to put the Lady Patriots in front to stay. She scored the game’s first goal off an assist by Emily Zurmuhhlen. Caitlin Rauchle made nine saves in net for Coventry. Becky Santos and Sarah Mills were defensive standouts for Coventry

October 5 Granby at Home

October 9 at Windsor Locks Under the Lights

PEARSON’S OVERTIME GOAL WINS GAME FOR COVENTRY When the clock was ticking down was when Coventry High girls soccer team did its best work. Trailing 1-0 with 3:00 left in regulation, Coventry received a tying goal from Amber Pelletier. With just 1:10 left in the second overtime, Kristin Pearson scored the game winner as Coventry edged Windsor Locks in NCCC action. Coventry received staunch goaltending from Caitlin Rauchle who made nine saves.

October 13 at Somers

LEVY BREAKS THROUGH, BUT SOMERS CAN’T…COVENTRY’S DEFENSE SPARLS WIN. When the Somers High girls soccer team visited Coventry on Sept 29, the Spartans won handily by a score of 4-1. The tables were turned in startling fashion on Tuesday though. Brooke Levy’s goal, 5 minutes before halftime proved to be the only goal that the Lady Patriots would need to gain a 1-0 NCCC victory. Staunch defense made the difference as Coventry snapped the Somers’ five game winning streak. Caitlin Rauchle made six saves for the shutout. “They did an awesome job on defense” Somers Coach Mark Lacafta said.

October 16 Suffield at Home (game shortened by snow)

Caitlin Rauchle made eight saves

October 21 at Ellington

Coventry’s Kristin Pearson exchanged second half goals and overtime goals with Ellington’s Brittany Boscarino. Pearson twice gave Coventry the lead with Amber Pelletier assisting on a goal that made it 2-1 in overtime. But Ellington answered with 6 seconds left on the clock in the second overtime. Caitlin Rauchle had 10 saves for the Lady Patriots.

October 23, Canton at Home

Kristin Pearson had a hat trick as Coventry rolled to a 7-0 NCCC victory against Canton. Amber Pelletier added two goals while Becky Santos had a goal and three assists for the Lady Pats. Sarah Mills also scored a goal. Caitlin Rauchle earned a shutout with eight saves and was aided by the defense of Emily Zurmuhlen and Brittany Pietro.

October 27, at East Windsor

Amber Pelletier scored twice as Coventry qualified for the State Tournament with an NCCC win. Sarah Mills, Becky Santos and Jen Levy (her first varsity goal) added a goal each for the Lady Pats. Caitlin Rauchle had 12 saves and then switched to outside forward to seek some offensive points. Cassie Brierly played well in goal for the entire second half.

October 30, at East Granby

November 2, Avon at Home

Avon led 2-0 until Amber Pelletier assisted by Nicki Kenefick  got the Patriots (7-6-2) back in the game with 31 minutes left to play. Unfortunately, Avon scored with 16 minutes to go to put it away. Standouts for the Lady Pats were Caitlyn Rauchle in goal with 11 saves and Brittany Pietro on defense with Emily Zurmuhlen (EZ) stopping and turning things in the midfield.

November 4, Bolton at Home

Sarah Willey, Sarah Mills and Amber Pelletier each scored one goal as Coventry won at home in NCCC action. Kristin Pearson had one assist for the Patriots. Caitlyn Rauchle earned the win with 8 saves.  Becky Santos, Emily Zurmuhlen and Brittany Pietro were all standouts for the Lady Pats.

November 9, 2009, Connecticut Class S State Tournament First Round

Portland scored 12:33 into the first half and that was all that they needed to oust the Lady Patriots. On a corner kick with 35:00 left in the second half, Sarah Mills and Kristin Pearson collided. Pearson, Coventry’s leading scorer sustained a concussion and did not return. Mills also did not return. Ashley Ellsworth left the game three minutes later after suffering a concussion for the hard luck Patriots. Caitlyn Rauchle had 8 saves in a strong showing as keeper.
